This work explores the integration of painting with material, culture, and presentation through silk as a medium. As a symbol of traditional Chinese craftsmanship, silk not only carries a rich cultural heritage but also offers a unique texture and visual expression. My goal is to use this work to introduce the refinement of Chinese craftsmanship to a broader audience, merging painting with cultural storytelling to present the depth and dynamism of Eastern art in a contemporary context.

The patterns on the artwork named “Real You,” is a reflection on self and life. The intricate, interwoven lines may appear complex, yet they are composed of simple elements, mirroring the paradox of life—seemingly chaotic yet ultimately returning to its essence. The black shape in the lower right corner represents the artist’s head, serving as a metaphor for an observer’s perspective—detached, impartial, and existing solely as a recorder. Each section of the composition functions as an independent narrative, symbolizing experiences of solitude, pain, longing, and hope, all of which intertwine to form a complete visual expression.

For this project, I chose silk scarves as the canvas, breaking the limitations of traditional flat artworks and utilizing a larger format to amplify visual impact. My initial attempt with 18-momme silk did not fully meet the textural expectations, leading to further exploration of 22-momme and 30-momme silk to enhance depth through variations in thickness and luster. These material experiments not only expanded the artwork’s visual complexity but also reinforced the application of Chinese traditional craftsmanship in contemporary artistic practices.

This piece is more than an artistic creation—it is an exploration of cultural expression through craftsmanship. I hope to push painting beyond the constraints of conventional canvases, creating a deeper interaction with the audience while showcasing the unique aesthetics of Eastern culture in a global context.
