GreenShade is a mobile application tailored for the elderly, designed to mitigate the risks and discomfort caused by the urban heat island effect. The design philosophy rests on two core pillars: "Heat Avoidance," which helps heat-sensitive seniors quickly locate cooler areas; and "Temperature Reduction," which empowers users to participate in mitigating urban heat through actionable daily habits, such as home energy management and plant care. By leveraging AI recommendations and AR technology, the app lowers technical barriers for older adults. It not only ensures safe travel during heatwaves but also transforms energy conservation and greening efforts into an engaging, gamified lifestyle. The interface strictly adheres to age-friendly standards and the principle of "Visual Cooling." The UI features a refreshing blue palette, psychologically evoking a sense of coolness. To assist users with declining vision, the design utilizes large typography, high-contrast colors, and rounded, approachable icons for maximum legibility. To overcome the challenge seniors often face with 2D maps, the navigation system innovates with a full-screen AR mode. This feature overlays a virtual "electronic guide dog" onto real-world streets for dynamic guidance. This intuitive interaction reduces cognitive load while significantly boosting user confidence and willingness to use the app.
GreenShade embeds sustainability into users' everyday actions. Reducing Heat Sources: Visualized energy monitoring guides users to optimize the use of high-heat appliances like air conditioners, directly lowering anthropogenic heat emissions. Increasing Cooling Sources: Gamified gardening features encourage citizens to cultivate more plants on balconies or in communities. The app transforms abstract environmental concepts into tangible experiences that users can both see (lower electricity bills) and play with (conversations with plants), promoting urban microclimate improvement through low-cost digital means.
