Chengdu MIXCLAND – A New Model of Emotional Placemaking

Chengdu MIXCLAND was a full-service creative experiment designed to celebrate the 13th anniversary of Chengdu MIXC. Framed as a “Disneyland for adults,” the project sought to explore new possibilities for commercial space by shifting its function—from a place of consumption to a vessel for emotional resonance and co-creation.

Inspired by Chengdu’s famously relaxed and imaginative lifestyle, the project merged online emotional storytelling, spatial narrative design, and site-specific public art to create a multisensory journey. Rather than just offer entertainment, MIXCLAND responded to the emotional tensions of contemporary urban life—offering visitors a temporary escape from everyday routines.

A key highlight of the project was the collaboration with British installation artist Matt Hope, who co-created the central artwork in the mall’s outdoor plaza. Built with lightweight metal, mirrored surfaces, and light-sound structures, the installation acted as a dynamic “emotional field.” It responded to natural light, kinetic energy, and ambient sound, shifting in appearance throughout the day. Visitors became part of the work—not just as viewers, but as activators, reflections, and co-authors of the experience.

The spatial layout was guided by the idea of “emotional flow.” Using the natural movement of the plaza, four thematic zones were created: disconnection from reality, pressure release, self-healing, and joyful return. Each zone combined light, sound, color, and participatory signage to guide emotional transitions—encouraging a process of subtle self-rebuilding and reconnection.

MIXCLAND was not just a celebration, but a test case for a new urban paradigm. It demonstrated how public art, retail space, and emotional design can merge into a unified experience. The project offered a replicable model of emotional placemaking, where space becomes a canvas for shared feeling, personal memory, and the evolving relationship between people and the city.
