The Figures is a pavilion project developed by Studio Surround, conceived as an architectural exploration into how spatial design can influence emotional experience. The concept centres on the creation of two contrasting exhibition halls: one located below ground, designed to evoke contemplative or negative emotions through its controlled perimeter skylights and subdued atmosphere; and another at ground level, aiming to inspire positive feelings through openness, natural light, and visual connections to the surrounding park.

Strategically situated within a public park, the pavilion fosters meaningful engagement with the local community. Its design integrates a layered, porous roof that features openings to accommodate existing trees, allowing nature to penetrate and coexist with the structure. This seamless integration of architecture and landscape strengthens the connection between the built environment and its natural context.

One of the most distinctive features of the pavilion is a series of abstract, sculptural columns with anthropomorphic qualities. These playful structural elements not only support the roof but also serve as functional spaces, transforming into high-top tables, seating pockets, and resting nooks. Their gestural, human-like forms evoke a sense of movement and emotion, encouraging interaction and curiosity. These columns subtly guide behaviour and contribute to the overall atmosphere of the space.

The pavilion's spatial configuration encourages exploration and social interaction. With multiple entrances and exits, visitors are invited to navigate the space freely, resulting in indeterminate and spontaneous encounters. Courtyards interspersed throughout the pavilion extend into the park, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor, and offering dynamic opportunities for rest, reflection, and gathering.

By combining sculptural elements with emotive spatial strategies and community integration, The Figures presents an innovative approach to pavilion design. It offers not only physical shelter but also a nuanced emotional journey, emphasising architecture’s potential to shape human experience through space, light, material, and interaction.
