The Story of Old and New

Located in the Shuanghu District of Suzhou, Guobin No. 1 is an 800-square-meter detached villa. The owners are entrepreneurs in the electronics industry; the couple has lived abroad for many years and has three sons. They embrace a relaxed and self-indulgent lifestyle. Having lived in their previous home for 15 years, they undertook this renovation to create a timeless, heirloom-quality residence that will serve as a warm haven for years to come.
The design is set in a modern natural style, respecting the beauty of the original structure's bones and optimizing the space from a structuralist perspective. All the interior corners throughout the house feature a uniform 30mm rounded finish, creating a soft, inviting touch. The staircase on the north side has been reimagined with a water-wave curve, allowing the flow of movement to engage naturally with the space. A circular porthole window has been installed in the basement to bring sunlight and fresh air into the darker areas, enhancing both energy efficiency and comfort.
The color scheme is based on warm gray micro-cement with a touch of warm wood, simple yet sophisticated. The old furniture and artworks cherished by the owner are retained, balancing emotional memory with environmental protection concepts, allowing the vintage texture to gently collide with modern hard finishes.
Light and shadow are the soul of the space. Natural light flows through curved walls, blinds, and skylights, circulating between the wood and micro-cement; wind passes through the transparent layout, bringing the breath of the seasons. The entire space simplifies complexity, with light, wind, wood, and arc lines coexisting, relaxed yet powerful, carrying family memories and sedimenting the warmth of the years.
