This project reimagines a museum design inspired by the Wigwam, a traditional Native American dwelling, highlighting the transformation of vernacular architecture into a contemporary museum context while emphasizing sustainability. The design integrates key elements from the Wigwam, including its non-linear enclosures, undulating columns, bark insulation, and roof apertures for smoke ventilation, into a modern architectural framework.
The museum’s entrance features curvy, oblique walls that reflect the rugged split rock formations on the site, creating a striking transition from the natural landscape to the interior space. Upon entering, visitors encounter a bright and open lounge, which leads into a zigzag corridor guiding them to two distinct exhibition halls. One of these halls, oriented eastward, showcases an exposed structural framework that allows for flexible exhibition arrangements, echoing the Wigwam’s adaptability and demonstrating the shift from vernacular to contemporary design.
Sustainability is a central theme in the design. The inverted cone roof is equipped with a gutter system that channels rainwater into a mini courtyard within the module. This water is collected, filtered, and reused, enhancing the museum’s environmental efficiency. The roof’s wood tiles and structures, inspired by the traditional Wigwam construction, are designed to be deconstructed and reused at the end of the museum’s lifespan, promoting sustainable material management and minimizing waste.
The interior space is organized into a loop sequence with timber walls, and includes separate cells for video displays and mechanical functions, concluding with restrooms and a staff office. The section cut of the exhibition hall illustrates how natural light interacts with the space through the inverted roof aperture and demonstrates the rainwater management system.
Overall, this project harmoniously blends the essence of traditional architecture with modern functionality and environmental sustainability. By integrating historical influences and contemporary practices, the museum not only respects its vernacular roots but also addresses current ecological concerns, creating a dynamic and sustainable cultural space.
