Mulberry Learning Centre was started with the dream of creating well-rounded children with imaginative minds, positive attitudes and strength of character. The learning centre is known for their unique pedagogy and vibrant Reggio-inspired learning spaces, comprehensive bilingual program, holistic development outcomes and strengths in character development via Habits of Mind.

The Site is located in the city center of Shenzhen Ruilan district, China. As one of the world’s growing titans of megacities, China has been known for its overdeveloped sprawling city landscape of concrete jungles. Young children are growing up in concentrated cities where skyscrapers and large mall towers over the city with little to no exposure to nature elements. Growing up devoid of nature could lead to adverse effects and may breed apathy towards environmental concerns. Children requires regular contact with nature to develop both physically and mentally. Being connected to nature prompts them to explore, take risks, question, experiment, discover, sing, dance, and imagine. These activities abound in the outdoors and are some of the many benefits of nature.

Our design explores the possibility of channelling the essence of nature’s key elements through spatial design to enhance children’s ability to experience and learn about nature through their immediate environment. Nature’s four key elements are namely, the wondrous Forest, the boundless Sea, the vast Sky and the majestic Mountains. The design team began by abstracting each of the four element’s unique qualities and translate them into abstract architectural forms. These abstract forms are extrapolated and applied in various settings to enhance the spatial experience.

The spatial experience aims to intrigue children’s curiosity, nudging them to explore their own backyards and neighbourhoods to connect them to worldly knowledge and appreciate the beauty and benefits our natural world have to offer.
